Sexuality and sexual matters have remained a taboo sub- ject in Kenya. it has been a subject that has been swept under the carpet, yet it is central to human well being as it begins before birth and lasts throughout the life span of a human being. Sexuality and sexual matters have remained a taboo sub- ject in Kenya. it has been a subject that has been swept under the carpet, yet it is central to human well being as it begins before birth and lasts throughout the life span of a human being. Many challenges hinder the advancement of sexuality debates and sexuality rights, including the absence of space for dialogue on the issues of sexuality. It is our submission at CREAW that in or- der to attain and acquire Sexual health, we require a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences free from coercion, discrimina- tion and violence. The construction of a positive discourse of sexuality in terms of pleasure empowerment and the rights related to sexuality and the need to open up public space(s) to discuss sexuality are critical to furthering a deeper understanding over the same. The youth form a core group of individuals in need of sex education and the promotion of sexual rights, therefore the approach by the Center for Rights, Education and Awareness (CREAW) to col- laborate with the University of Nairobi. We aim to equip the youth with essential information and increase their understanding of sexuality and its related rights. We expect to break new grounds in demystifying sex and sexual health and bring relevant information to the doorstep of the youth in a friendly way. This research is therefore fundamental as it informs the levels and sources of awareness on sexu- ality and sexuality-related rights among the youth while also assessing the nature and extent of sexuality-related rights’ violations and the prevailing perceptions, attitudes and practices in regard to sexuality and sexuality-related rights. The research seeks to investigate the various strategic interventions that can be used in order to empower the youth in order to ensure that they are in charge of their sexuality, which is an integral aspect of their very being and is definitive of their individual identities. Demystifying sexuality is therefore critical to positively influence the myriad of attitudes and practices surrounding sexuality and sexuality-related rights, particularly as they relate to gender differentials, abilities of young men and women to negotiate healthy sexual relationships in their private sphere. It is my sincere hope that the information contained in the report will shape interventions that are sustainable and contribute towards the attainment of sexual health and the attainment of people’s power over sexuality. |
