Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro: A Kenyan Woman’s Perspective in Fighting Gender Violence

Ann Njogu, The Chairperson of Centre for Rights, Education and Awareness, has narrated her colorful experiences during the Mt.Kilimanjaro Climb, translating the lessons she learnt from heradventures into applicable themes that can be used in our daily professional and private lives. In her narration, she touches onthemes such as teamwork, goal setting, and motivation. She draws on many of the metaphors hidden in the world of adventure and Gender Based Violence and brings them to her audience in a humorously inspiring way. These adventures are potent and tactile; reminding us that it is critical to focus on detail, embrace small successes, and disregard the expectations others create in order to achieve the potential of the fight against gender based violence.

Ann incorporates the following themes while telling stories of her mountaineering experiences: Creating your own vision, Roped up for Teamwork, Forging on in spite of a fall, Celebrating the small stepsand minor victories, Adversity: avalanches do occur, Courage is not the absence of fear, Commitment to reach the summit, Flexibility: Here comes the storm, Sacrifice: Give yourself to the team and Shattering perceptions.

Meet the Climbers

The Africa UNiTE Kilimanjaro Climb mobilized 38 climbers from almost 30 African countries from all regions. North, East, South, West and Central African representatives will climb Kilimanjaro in less then 10 days – from March 5 to 9. They will endeavour to reach the top of the mountain on March 8, flagging out the commitments of their respective countries!

Tanzanian Officials, Celebrities, Journalists, representatives of the UN, AUC and other organizations will be accompanying the country climbers, amounting to more than 100 climbers!
